LOS ANGELES TIMES CARTOON: Caretaker Senators

Impotent Democracy

I draw cartoons for The Los Angeles Times about issues related to California and the Southland (metro Los Angeles).

This week: Due to a quirk caused by redistricting, 4 million Californians will not have an elected state senator until the year 2014. Until then a caretaker senator from a neighboring district will take charge of these no man’s lands. How on earth are constituents supposed to pressure their fake senators?

  • So a special election is completely out of the question in a freakn’ democracy?

Y’know, for a country obsessed with claiming that democracy = good, our various governments really don’t seem to like voting.

  • One of the reasons I like Ted’s work so much is that it’s informative as well as funny/insightful/etc. Here I live in CA, am decently well-informed, and didn’t know this at all.

Of course, as my much better informed daughter likes to point out, most Californians don’t have any idea who their state senator is, so the fact that they’re unrepresented for a couple of years? Eh.
