A much-discussed poll reveals that 80% of Americans distrust the government.

30% of Americans think their ancestors coexisted with dinosaurs about 6,000 years ago, another 29% aren't sure.

The thing about polls is that they don't represent any absolute values, the 80% of distrustful citizen don't really care that much, there are only a few thousands willing to make a spectacle of themselves at teabagger protests, much less vote scoundrels out of office.

The culture of this country today is the culture of apathy, the vast majority of Americans don't care about anything that doesn't entertain them.

Would you folks be happier if 80% claimed they trust government? If that poll was taken in Cuba, I bet you'd get an even higher number.
Distrusting authority (especially state power) is intrinsically good.
