Countdown to Afghanistan

The plan: Return to South Asia this summer to find out what's really going on in U.S.-occupied Afghanistan. I'll travel to Taliban-controlled areas as well as some of the most remote parts of the country where reporters never go...and I will be unembedded.

No body armor. No armed guards. Just me. And a friend.

Needed: $25,000 in travel expenses. Includes airfare, local transport, bribes to get around and evade capture, hiring fixers, etc. Believe it or not, this is a very low budget. I'll spend at least $10,000 of my own money to do this above that.

How: I'm raising the money through an appeal at Kickstarter.

But time is running out.

Total backers: 134 so far (thanks, everyone!)

Total raised: $11,105

Days left: 20

If you'd like to pledge money (your card only gets charged if the money is raised, and I refund it if I don't go on the trip for any reason), please click the link.

Thanks!

On principle, I cannot in good conscience give you money, Ted, even to send you into harm's way. But I am hoping that my saying this will infuriate your trolls to the point they contribute to your cause.

I hope you understand that the reasons the Taliban is sought to be avoided by journalists is because they will most likely decapitate you just as they have any of the soldiers whom of which were only trying to make it a free country in which the families and children could grow up in. Now don't get me wrong I too believe that we have spent far to long fighting a useless battle for nothing but the political parties here in the states. But I for one served over there in Iraq. I have lost many friends in this war to the insurgent population. I just want to say I support my fellow members of the U.S. military, but I do not support the war fought by our governmment. Now with this being said all war is ugly and no matter what we do as individuals this will not change the face of battle. I am one of the many who have fought for your right not only to go over to these area's of conflict but to simply be able to write about any opinion you may have on any matter you deem worthy of your illustrated works. So I believe it should go with out saying that you would not be allowed to express your opinions about any subject matter with out the individuals that raised their right hand and swore to uphold the freedom of the constitution set fourth to us by our four fathers. And to protect and defend our own great nation. I also feel that even if we were to successfully set up a structured government within these area's of conflict and pull all our men and women out of these area's of current operations there will only be another tyranical group that will eventually take control of the government within these area's and begin again what the former regime's were doing. No matter what we do these countries seem doomed to repeat past opressions of another culture within their own country whether it be do to religious reasons or what ever said group of so called revolutionists come up with to commence ethnic cleansing.
