Pulling a "Katrina" on Haiti
People are donating massive amounts of aid to the Haitian earthquake victims. And, just like New Orleans after Katrina, the aid is not getting to them.
However, after Katrina, the organizations that were most of effective in helping the Big Easy were the small operations like Food Not Bombs and Common Ground Relief.
It looks a group called Seeds For Haiti is just such a small group who can help (which happens to be run by Haitian-Americans in residing in Brooklyn). After all, the Haitians will have to grow their own food once they're back out into the countryside. Please donate.

Charitable organizations IMHO are not the solution, 100% of the aide should come from the US government through taxes. It's only fitting that our government should pay them back cause it fucked Haiti up to begin with.
Anonymous 10:18,
The Katrina debacle was the fault of the mayor of New Orleans, the governor of Louisiana, and the President of the United States, respectively. I do not defend either incompetence or malicious intent, regardless of political party. I consider myself independent of political parties.
That said, the Katrina debacle was also the fault of the huge charity organizations like the Red Cross, who took billions of dollar of donations and gave barely a red cent to Katrina survivors. It looks like we are seeing a repeat of this in Haiti.
Slightly off-topic, but anybody who says Harry Reid is racist because he used the word Negro is about as intellectually dishonest as they come, especially if they're a so-called conservative. And it hurts like hell to defend Harry Reid, trust me.
10:18, you conservatives are trying to make mileage out of the Reid thing, but however awkward his words, they were spoken in support of a black man's run for the presidency. This is in contrast to Trent Lott, the comparison conservatives keep trying to make. His words were spoken in a nostalgic remembrance of segregation.
Context does matter.
Russell, you are absolutely correct -Context does matter.
It's not just tit-for-tat. Outcomes are important.
Speaking of context: Does anybody else think that comparing a hurricane heading for the Gulf Coast of the United States to an earthquake hitting Haiti is a bit strange?
Let's examine the context; How often the Gulf Coast of the United States gets hit with hurricanes? How often does Haiti get hit with earthquakes. Are we really talking about the same thing here?
I don't think we are. The important difference was an immediate response by the US Government, which didn't happen with Aceh, and didn't happen with Katrina....but DID happen back in 1999 with hurricane Floyd in North Carolina. See....leadership really does matter, does it make things perfect? Of course not, Haiti wasn't prepared for an earthquake and probably didn't have the expertise to anticipate it. . . . Unlike. . . say. . . a Hurricane hitting the Gulf Coast of the United States....in early FALL!!!!! *sigh*
Yes. Context matters. Details matter too. And of course, Susan, as always....editing matters.
Come back here when you make sense, Aggie.
Anyone....in what way did I NOT make sense? What aspects of my post were unclear?
Susan, are you aware that hurricanes routinely hit the gulf coast that time of year....they are expected, and form over the course of days, sometimes weeks. Do earthquakes routinely hit Haiti? Is the news media filled with details and information about 'the earthquake approaching Haiti'??
These are two exceptionally different events.
I know you so desperately want everything to fit into your Omni-point about the world, that shit ain't right....but GEEEZE, these are two different events.
I don't believe what I wrote didn't make sense. It may not have made sense to you.
Charitable organizations IMHO are not the solution, 100% of the aide should come from the US government through taxes.
Albert Cirrus, pardon my Cartesian-self but isn't that possible only if you forbid both charitable donations and aid from other governments? Doesn't that sound a little nutty?
Aggie, it is entirely correct to compare Haiti with New Orleans. They're both natural disasters.
"Aggie, it is entirely correct to compare Haiti with New Orleans. They're both natural disasters."
Susan, is this the best you can do with regard to similarities? ONE extremely general similarity? The CEO of Goldman Sachs compared the financial meltdown to Katrina too, and was promptly reminded in a congressional hearing that they aren't the same.
You're using the same logical test of correlation that the Tea Baggers used when they called Obama's healthcare plan Nazi, because the Nazis also had a universal healthcare plan.
It's asinine!!!!!!! Stop it, you're giving liberalism a bad name!!!
Anon 11:38 PM....Susan wasn't responding to you, did you even read her post?
you're giving liberalism a bad name!!!
Don't lay it on Susan. Liberalsim is getting walloped just fine without Susan. But keep up the arrogance Dave!
A lesson in logic from Aggie. Now that's funny!
