The essay/interview begins in error. Ted did have someone to turn to. His mother. Anticipating rejection, he chose not to.
In years past, Ted was furious at his father, and made no bones about transferring that fury to all fathers. In a few emails, I took exception to his painting all fathers with his broad brush. I wondered what stories his mother might have fed him. No parent can escape telling 'their side' of the story to a vulnerable, naive child of divorce.
Whatever the factors, Ted quieted down from that soapbox in recent years. I told him he should be thankful just for the genes from both his parents, because he is clearly an exceptionally talented and gifted young man, not to forget his personal efforts and energies. Not every genius-level human stays out of trouble or gaol.
