Smart Stuff from the Mailbag

Timothy Gawne sent the following email, which is too smart for me to keep to myself. He was kind enough to grant me permission to share this with you, so I hope you find it as interesting as I do.

As usual your column was wonderful. Yes, isn't it bizarre that we are "debating" something that nobody understands?

However, I think there is method in Obama's madness. Obama has people debating his words, which leaves him room to DO whatever he likes. Politically it's brilliant. For example, Obama talked about reigning in CEO pay. The talk-show hosts argued about whether we should limit the CEO pay of bailed-out banks. However, the reality of what Obama was actually doing was explicitly guaranteeing and subsidizing CEO pay. Brilliant.

Or with supreme court justice Sotomayor, he claimed he picked her because she was 'compassionate' and a Latina. So everyone debated whether being compassionate or a Latina was appropriate for picking a supreme court justice, nobody talked about the brute fact that Sotomayor overwhelmingly supports big corporations over individuals, which is almost certainly the real reason for picking her.

I propose that Obama knows exactly what he is doing, and that the complexity of the Health care 'reform' bill is by design.

From past actions, here is my interpretation of Obama's health care 'reform':

Profits for Drug and medical insurance companies will be maintained. There will be no cost controls and government will not negotiate lower prices. Illegal immigrants will be covered, which will benefit agribusiness and the cheap labor lobby in general. However, the total amount we spend on health care will fall, mostly to free up money to pay the debt created by the massive bailout of Wall Street. Therefore, the actual amount of real health care that average Americans get will be limited, and the amount they pay will skyrocket. French socialism this ain't.

Smart, but he gives Obama too much credit.

He will always be pro-corporate because his handlers are. He is doing what his experts tell him to do. Who is he to think for himself?

Not one 'expert' or Nostradamus-type has guessed the winning Big Game or Powerball numbers. This 'method to his (Obama's) madness' goes back, comtemporarily, to Ronald Reagan when his Alzheimer's Disease symptoms were hidden from Congress by Nancy "Still Free and Unindicted and living on the taxpayers' dime" Reagan and the rest of the pathetic, power-mad Republican Party. Hypothetically, a crazy President scares the shit out of similarly crazy despots, but everyone who ever took over a country has seen "The Mouse That Roared." If George W. Bush fell on his head coming out of Air Farce One, he could have made at least one right decision in eight years. He nearly made his best decision when he choked on a pretzel. Actually, I think it was a pubic hair from Condi Rice, but that's another conspiracy theory. One other thing, though. Obama will have heard enough cheap shots at his skin color, and when that happens, if it hasn't already, look out! Obama IS the freaking President.
Chicken Little, tell us more of what's going to happen other than the ubiquitous DOOM that has pervaded our country since we allowed George W. Bush to have the codes to the nuclear arsenal. And the hate-mongers are going to blame it all on a Black man? What a maroon!

Covering illegal immigrants wouldn't be a bad thing. Hospitals would no longer be able to use their obligation to treat uninsured illegals as an excuse for outrageous prices.

What will their new excuse be? I'm sure it will also be unchallenged. No one on the national stage has dared to bring up the issue of hospital costs and Medicare part A. Forget lobbying by insurance companies and pharma, hospitals are untouchable.

Everyone here knows this. Thanks for writing it so clearly.

Most of us knew this game long ago.
Didn't get the hype, didn't fall for it this time. But the situation is pretty bleak. Those in power are not going to just let it go right or wrong.

Mr. Gawne presents a pretty decent deduction. However, if the "public option" doesn't cost less than the insurance companies do, then people will realize that they've been taken for a ride on this. And if the "public option" does cost less, then that will bite into the insurance companies' profit margins.

But Mr. Gawne's deduction becomes more plausible if the "public option" only pays for emergency care for the currently uninsured. This would have no effect on insurance companies' profits. But then if it only paid for emergency care . . .

Yes, we're way WAY too stupid to deserve French Socialism. In fact Obamacare is meticulously designed to maintain the status quo. This is what makes the Republican opposition to it so utterly laughable. We're delaying the inevitable 'correct' solution as long as possible by acting like it isn't even an option.

The reason we do this is clear: we are unwilling to recognize that institutionalized greed is immoral and unethical, and needs to be worked against. In essence, unfettered capitalism is stupid and has been screwing the United States and it's population for a long time, not to mention the entire world. Yet we supposedly have democracy. This is all a freakin' sham.

The USA will have socialism when the capitalists have stolen everything that they can stuff into their bulging pockets and run off with it all. Not until then. Probably about the time the country fractures into several pieces, likely dominated by Mexico. (Jove, that would be SO funny!)

I don't want to rain on his parade since it is a smart email. But I think it's pretty obvious that the current healthcare plan is being crafted to ensure an unlimited supply of business as opposed to raising our standard of living.

Obvious to socialists at least...

Susan, what point are you trying to make? I've thought about what you've written from a few different angles...
