When I first saw this cartoon, I thought it was both brilliant and was definitely going to piss off a lot of old-school political cartoonists.

I really like American editorial cartoons. I read them frequently at cagle.com. But I am really fed up with all the symbols and labels. Don't the cartoonists trust people to think for themselves and figure out the point/message of the cartoon? Nothing as unfunny as a joke that has to be explained.
amazing! I agree with you completely, except as I'm sure you know there are exceptions like Tom Toles, who can use labels and cross hatching in a good way.
Ted, when are you going to admit that you are the Bad Cartoonist? This deflection nonsense is necessary I suppose to give your denials some weight, but let's just come out with it already, yes?
I've always just approached cartooning by letting my style be whatever style comes out -- never thought if it was pre or post anything. I wouldn't modify it, my style, for anyone. I think the writing, the "gag" behind the work, is as important as the drawing -- like with Thurber, even more important. Anybody can scribble, not many people can actually write. That is a bit of a paradox, being a cartoonist.

I think most editorial cartoons should have a section reserved for a grinning man with a cross hatched penis hanging down saying "Look at my cock!" because that's the level of maturity of most of them
